UTM tags: a simple guide to tracking every link you share

MARKETING GUIDE 5 tags to track every link youshare Trendifico

When someone clicks a link in your newsletter, analytics tools often cannot tell where they came from. UTM tags fix that by adding labels to the end of the link.

The five tags

  • utm_source: where the link lives, like newsletter or facebook.
  • utm_medium: the type of channel, like email, social or cpc.
  • utm_campaign: the campaign name, like spring_sale.
  • utm_term: the paid keyword (optional).
  • utm_content: which version of an ad or link (optional).

Build tagged links without typos using the UTM link builder.

Spaces become underscores and tags are lowercased so reports stay tidy.

Three rules that keep reports clean

  • Always use lowercase. Facebook and facebook show up as two different sources.
  • Use the same names every time. Keep a list your whole team can see.
  • Never add UTM tags to links between your own pages. It breaks visit tracking.

While you are working on a page, check how it looks in Google with the SERP snippet preview and tidy its address with the URL slug generator.
