Ethereum staking in 2026: how it works, what it pays and the risks

CRYPTO GUIDE ~3% Ethereum staking APR in2026 Trendifico

Key takeaways

  • Solo staking needs 32 ETH and a computer running Ethereum software. Pools, liquid staking and exchanges accept much smaller amounts.
  • Reported base staking yields in mid-2026 sat around 2.7% to 3.1% a year, before platform fees.
  • Withdrawals work, but exits wait in a queue that has stretched beyond 45 days at busy times.

Ethereum has run on proof of stake since 2022. Instead of miners, validators lock up ETH to propose and confirm blocks, and the network rewards them for doing it honestly. Staking is how you take part, either directly or through a provider.

How Ethereum staking works

According to ethereum.org, solo validators deposit 32 ETH and run both an execution client and a consensus client that stay online. Validators earn rewards for doing their job, lose small amounts when they go offline, and can be slashed, losing part of their stake and being removed, for provably malicious behaviour.

Four ways to stake ETH

  • Solo staking. 32 ETH, your own hardware and full control. It usually pays the most because nobody takes a cut.
  • Staking pools. Several people combine their ETH. Some pools accept very small deposits, and the pool operator takes a fee.
  • Liquid staking. You receive a token that represents your staked ETH and can be traded, though it can trade below the value of ETH.
  • Exchanges. The simplest option. The exchange runs everything and keeps a share of the rewards.

Staking Rewards notes that net yield generally falls in that order, from solo staking down to exchanges, because each layer adds fees.

What staking actually pays

Reported base yields in mid-2026 sat around 2.7% to 3.1% a year. Validators that use MEV-Boost can earn roughly 0.5 to 1 percentage point more, according to KuCoin's 2026 analysis. Yields also move with participation: rewards per validator fall as more ETH is staked, and about a third of all ETH was staked by mid-2026.

To see what a rate means for your own stake, enter the rate you receive after your provider's fee. At these rates compounding makes a small difference each year, but it adds up over time.

Risks to understand first

  • Price risk. Rewards are paid in ETH. If the price falls, your dollar value can drop even as your ETH balance grows. Test scenarios with the crypto profit calculator.
  • Exit queues. Withdrawals have worked since the 2023 Shanghai upgrade, but exits are processed in a queue. Waits are usually days, though GlobalStake reports they passed 45 days during a large unstaking event in 2024.
  • Slashing. Penalties are small for a single mistake but grow when many validators are slashed at the same time.
  • Provider risk. With pools, liquid staking and exchanges, you rely on another company's software and security.

How staking rewards are taxed in the US and UK

In the US, IRS Revenue Ruling 2023-14 says staking rewards count as income at their fair market value when you gain "dominion and control", meaning you can sell or move them (BDO summary). In the UK, HMRC's cryptoassets manual generally treats staking rewards as income when you receive them, with Capital Gains Tax due when you later sell. This is general information, not tax advice.

Key terms

Validator
A participant that stakes ETH and runs software to propose and confirm blocks.
Slashing
A penalty that removes part of a validator's stake for provably malicious behaviour.
Liquid staking token
A tradeable token that represents staked ETH and its rewards.
APR vs APY
APR is the simple yearly rate. APY includes the effect of compounding rewards.
